The United State’s public perception of ‘marijuana’ is the result of propoganda, designed to promote xenophobic and racist attitudes. Starting in the 1930’s, powerful U.S. organizations such as the Federal Bureau of Narcotics began public misinformation campaigns, using bold statements and unfounded facts to deter the American youth. These ideas would be disseminated through all channels of media available at the time and reinforced through the public’s lack of access to opposing information.
ProperGanja is an interactive AR experience responding to America‘s cumulative perceptions of cannabis culture, using examples of 20th century propaganda as a backdrop for contemporary narratives and critique.
ProperGanja was displayed in the RISD Museum as a part of Jess Brown’s ArtTwerking final exhibition, Weed Show: A Show about Weed.
